Form controls water
Traditional masonry was shaped to manage exposure. Projecting cornices throw water clear of the wall below. Sloping cills drain openings. Drips and throats break the path of water tracking back toward the façade. Coping stones protect the top of parapets and walls, while skew details close vulnerable roof edges.
When erosion, poorly formed replacement stone or thick coatings remove these small changes in profile, water can remain against joints and faces for longer. A detail may still resemble the original from the street while no longer performing its technical role.
Joints, beds and finishes also matter
Stone should normally be selected and laid with regard to its natural bedding. Mortar joints accommodate small irregularities and provide a maintainable, sacrificial route for moisture movement. Tooled finishes influence appearance, weathering and the visual relationship between new and historic work.
Accurate templates, profiles and site dimensions are therefore essential when forming replacement copes, mouldings, cills or surrounds. The objective is not ornamental perfection; it is to reinstate geometry that works with gravity, capillary action, movement and the surrounding construction.
Preserve details as part of the envelope
Restorex assesses architectural stone together with roofs, leadwork, windows and rainwater goods. Sound original details are retained where practical. Where repair or replacement is necessary, the new work should reproduce the relevant falls, projections, drips and junctions so character and performance are preserved together.
