Compatible replacement stone formed around the existing building

Natural stone replacement is appropriate where decay, fracture, movement or previous intervention has left insufficient sound material for a reliable local repair. Restorex first considers whether the original stone can be retained, consolidated or repaired before recommending removal.

Replacement stone is selected for geological and visual compatibility, including colour, texture, bedding, strength and expected weathering. Individual indents are cut back to sound masonry, accurately formed and finished to reproduce the required profile without making the elevation appear artificially new.

Restorex undertakes local indents, larger ashlar replacements, moulded details and coordinated dismantling and rebuilding. Work is planned alongside lime joints, lead weatherings, rainwater goods and adjoining masonry so the source of deterioration is addressed as well as the damaged stone.

Frequently asked questions

Natural stone replacement in Edinburgh FAQs

When should stone be replaced rather than repaired?

Replacement is generally considered when deterioration is too deep, unstable or extensive to support a durable repair. The decision should follow close inspection.

How is replacement stone matched?

Selection considers geology, colour, grain, porosity, strength, bedding and finish—not colour alone.

Can you reproduce moulded details?

Yes. Existing profiles, drawings or agreed templates can be used to form replacement architectural stone.
