Correctly detailed leadwork at vulnerable roof junctions

Lead protects valleys, gutters, chimneys and abutments where roof geometry concentrates water. Splits, inadequate falls, poorly formed junctions and restricted thermal movement can produce recurring leaks that are difficult to trace from inside a building. Inspection must include the lead and the construction supporting it.

Restorex assesses whether local repair is proportionate or whether complete renewal is required. New leadwork is formed with appropriate bay sizes, laps, fixings, joints and allowance for movement, following the project specification. Slate, masonry and timber repairs are coordinated so the finished junction works as a complete system.

Leadwork can be delivered as a standalone planned repair or as part of a wider roof or building-restoration programme. Combining the trades is especially valuable at chimneys, skews, parapets and concealed gutters where responsibility can otherwise fall between separate contractors.

Frequently asked questions

Roof leadwork contractors in Edinburgh FAQs

Why does roof leadwork split?

Common causes include restricted thermal movement, unsuitable bay lengths, fatigue, poor fixing or defects in the supporting construction.

Can an existing lead gutter be patched?

Sometimes, but suitability depends on the lead’s age, condition, detailing and the location of failure. Repeated splitting may indicate that renewal or altered detailing is needed.

Can you renew leadwork during reslating?

Yes. Coordinating leadwork with slate renewal allows vulnerable junctions to be opened and completed in the correct sequence.
