Cleaning selected around the substrate, soiling and conservation objective

Stone cleaning should never be approached simply as making a façade look new. The wrong pressure, temperature, chemical or abrasive method can remove the protective surface, sharpen colour differences and accelerate future decay.

Restorex assesses the substrate and type of soiling before recommending trials. Where suitable, DOFF superheated-water cleaning can remove biological growth, coatings and certain contaminants using controlled heat and relatively low water volume and pressure.

A representative trial area allows the client and professional team to review the result before wider work proceeds. Cleaning is coordinated with pointing and repairs so the programme does not conceal defects or damage newly completed masonry.

Frequently asked questions

Stone cleaning and DOFF cleaning Edinburgh FAQs

Is DOFF suitable for every stone façade?

No. The stone condition, soiling and intended outcome must be assessed, and a trial area is normally advisable.

Will cleaning restore the original colour?

It may reduce surface soiling, but natural weathering, staining and colour variation remain part of the stone. An artificially uniform finish is not the objective.

Should cleaning happen before stone repair?

Sequencing depends on the project, but trials and preliminary cleaning can help reveal defects before final repair decisions are made.
